If you have ever changed permalink structure of your WordPress website then crawl errors in Google webmaster tools won’t be a pretty sight. I have a blog whose permalink structure had “/blog” in each url. Later when I decided to get rid of it then I was welcomed with hundreds of “404 not found” errors in Webmaster tools. This isn’t good for seo and my traffic dropped about 50% within a week.
So, the best way to resolve this issue was to put a 301 redirect and by this way I can also pass all the link juice to new urls. 301 redirect can be implemented by creating rules in .htaccess or by means of a plugin (preferable and noob friendly).
Most of the plugins out there only offer ability to add single URL at a time and are worthless if you have to put redirection for hundreds of urls.
Best Plugin for Batch 301 Redirects in WordPress?
Redirection is one plugin that provides the ability to add batch urls in csv, xml and .htaccess format. Now , I will show you the exact procedure which I followed to accomplish this task successfully.
- Firstly you should login into Google webmaster accounts and then navigate to Crawl errors.
- This will show you all the urls which are not found. Now click on the download button and save them in CSV format. Delete B, C and D columns from the csv file and you will be only left with url list column.
- Copy the whole A column and Paste in the adjoining B column. Now we need to delete any extra terms from the urls of B column. In my case it was “/blog”. So, Select Column B and Press Ctrl+H to open find and replace box. Paste the the undesired term (/blog) in find box and press replace All button.
Now we have list of of Urls to be redirected in Column A and their new 301 redirection paths in Column B.
Next step is to login into WordPress account and install Redirection plugin from WordPress repository. After successfully installation and activation you can find it under Tools menu.
In redirection plugin navigate to Option tab and the Choose file button under Import heading. Upload the csv File and you are done.
Tip: Don’t forget to mark all the redirected urls in Google Webmaster tools as Fixed.
